Silografia impressa su carta vergellata, priva di filigrana e con testo latino al verso per l’edi - zione del 1511. Monogramma al centro bordo inferiore. Terzo stato su quattro (Meder 165 III/IV). Rifilata al bordolinea, sempre presente tranne per pochi centimetri all’angolo inferiore destro. Esemplare in buono stato di conservazione, dalla vivida inchiostratura con leggerissima trasparenza del testo retrostante; al verso tracce di colla, in particolare lungo i bordi laterali; qualche piccolissima grinza alla carta, in particolare all’angolo infe - riore sinistro. STRAUSS 55 - La radiosità del volto del Signore è stata accentuata da un alone di raggi e il pomo della sua spada sembra un sigillo appena spostato dalle sue labbra. Il paesaggio è stato omesso anche se era praticamente obbligatorio nei primi fogli della serie. In ogni caso, Dürer ha qui concentrato la sua attenzione sull’essenziale… I passi scritturali che seguono spiegano che i sette candelabri simboleggiano le sette chiese levantine di Efeso, Smirne, Pergamo, Tiatira, Sardi, Laodicea e Filadelfia. Oggi è opinione diffusa che l’Apo - calisse non sia stata scritta dall’autore dei Vangeli, ma da un altro Giovanni, di cui la tra - dizione parla come vissuto a Efeso tra la fine del I e l’inizio del II secolo. Good condition, vivid ink, strong contrasts, with very light transparency of the text behind; traces of moun - ting former on “verso” along the side edges; some very small wrinkles on the paper, mostly on lower left corner. STRAUSS 55 - The radiance of the Lord’s countenance has been accentuated by a nimbus of rays, and the pommel of his sword seems like a seal just moved aside of his lips. A lan - dscape, virtually obligatory in the early sheets, has been omitted. In all respects, Dürer has here concentrated his attention on essentials... The scriptural passages which follow this one explain that the seven candlesticks denote the seven Levantine churches of Ephe - sus, Smyrna, Pergamon, Thyatira, Sardis, Laodicea, and Philadelphia. It is now widely be - lieved that the Apocalypse was not written by the author of the gospels, but by another John of whom tradition speaks as living in Ephesus toward the end of the first and the beginning of the second century.
